Damaris West is a British author of poetry, short stories, memoirs and novels. Some of her poetry has appeared in magazines and anthologies, and she has three published novels.
Instilled at an early age with appreciation of the natural world, it is still immensely important to her and much of her poetry celebrates it. She always writes from knowledge and experience and would feel lost without them when describing a setting in a novel. You could tell where she’s lived from the places she writes about, including Umbria in central Italy where she spent more than thirteen years.
The emotions and issues she explores through her characters are wide-ranging: parental or spousal domination, estrangement, lack of purpose, unrequited love, cruelty, revenge, as well as contentment, and joy in beauty.
She lives close to the sea in Scotland, in a small stone bungalow that was once a stable, with the companionship of two Italian rescue dogs, one or other of which permanently occupies the knee-hole of her desk.
