Richard Temple Savage was an orchestral musician who played bass clarinet under Sir Thomas Beecham in the LPO from 1934 until 1946. Thereafter he became Chief Librarian and a member of the orchestra at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He received the MBE in 1980 for services to music. In 1988 he published his ‘frank and cheerful reminiscences’ in the form of the book, A Voice from the Pit (David and Charles).
